My brother and I have a lot in common, but chose different paths in life: He has the same mannerisms as me - a nasal sort of voice, and a soft personality that stays masculine probably just because we're both really hairy. We both love martial arts, mind-expanding conversations, and challenging norms. However, I'm working at one of the top few law firms in probably the most competitive legal market in the country (San Francisco), and he has vowed to never work a job in his life. I'm expected to bill something like 2400 hours next year - meaning I'll be working, on average, from 7:30am to 9:00pm Monday through Friday, and about 9-5 on every Saturday (check out Yale's article for a good take on converting billable hours to work hours). He might drive 2400 miles next year in his Volkswagen bus, simply for the purpose of visiting new hot springs with his girlfriend. He might spend $2,400 next year in total. I've lost that much on a bad weekend in Vegas.
The point is this: my brother lives a Spartan lifestyle, and I'm pretty good at spending money. Clubs, cabs, drinks, restaurants, gifts, whatever. When he and I started talking about my upcoming job, and the fear of the "golden handcuffs," he asked, why don't I just try to save as much as I can? And make a blog out of it. So I did.
So far I've spent $0 in October, 2013. I aim to keep it that way.
